Training for a Spring Race? Five Ways to Reach the Start Line Healthy

Winter is when Austin runners build toward spring races, and it is also when overuse injuries show up. These five habits keep most runners on track.

Build mileage gradually. Big jumps in weekly mileage are one of the most common reasons runners end up in our clinic. Add distance slowly and plan an easier week every few weeks.

Strength train twice a week. Hips, calves and core do a lot of the work in every stride. Two short sessions a week make a real difference.

Don't run through pain that changes your stride. If you are limping or changing how you run to avoid pain, stop and get it checked.

Check your shoes. Worn out shoes and sudden switches to a very different shoe both cause trouble. Change gradually.

Get a gait analysis if an injury keeps coming back. Recurring injuries usually have a cause in how you move. Find it before race day, not after.

Dr. Davis races triathlons and running events himself and knows what it takes to get to the finish line. See our Pre- and Post-Race Training and Rehab page.
